The Month of May is All About Nurses
Each year, May is the month when nurses, and many different types of nursing roles, are recognized and celebrated. These days and weeks of recognition are a way for nursing professional associations to honor their members, as well as to promote nursing careers to potential future nurses. Additionally, Nurses' Week is also a time for employers to recognize their nursing staff. Below is a list of the nursing recognition dates.
National Nurses' Day: May 6
Some also refer to this as National RN Recognition Day.
Nurses' Week: May 6 - 12
This year's theme for Nurses Week is "Nurses Trusted to Care" according to the American Nurses Association (ANA). All types of nurses are recognized throughout this week.
National Student Nurses' Day: May 8
Recognizing future nurses who are in school or training.
National Nurse's Day began as a way to honor nurses who dedicate themselves to caring for others. In 1974, President Richard Nixon proclaimed a "National Nurse Week" and in 1981, nurses in New Mexico initiated a resolution to have May 6 declared "National Recognition Day for Nurses." The American Nurses Association (ANA) promoted the proposal and in 1982, the United States Congress designated May 6 to be "National Recognition Day for Nurses." President Ronald Reagan signed the proposal, making it official. It was later expanded by the ANA Board of Directors in 1990 to a week-long celebration (May 6 to 12) known as "National Nurses Week."
